Slugging for Skin: What It Is, How It Works & Why Shea Butter Might Be Better
Share

Have you heard of "slugging" yet? It’s a popular skincare trend where you apply a thick, occlusive layer over your face before bedtime to lock in moisture. Traditionally, people use petroleum jelly (like Vaseline or Aquaphor), but there’s growing interest in natural alternatives like raw shea butter—and for good reason.
💧 What Is Slugging?
Slugging involves applying an occlusive substance over your nighttime skincare routine to seal in hydration. This technique can protect your skin barrier, reduce dryness, and help calm irritation—especially helpful during winter or when using drying actives like retinoids.
🔍 Is Petroleum Jelly Good for You?
Petroleum jelly is highly occlusive, forming a barrier on the skin that prevents moisture loss. This can be great for dry or flaky skin. Personally, I’ve found that using Vaseline after applying retinoids reduces flaking overnight.
However, for acne-prone skin, petroleum-based products may feel too heavy and could potentially clog pores. It's always a good idea to patch-test any new product or method on a small area first.

🌿 Shea Butter: A Natural Alternative to Petroleum Jelly
Unrefined shea butter is an excellent plant-based alternative to Vaseline for slugging. It’s also an occlusive—but with additional skin-loving benefits:
-
Rich in vitamins A, E, and F
-
Naturally anti-inflammatory and soothing
-
Non-comedogenic for most skin types (but always patch test!)
-
Absorbs more gently into the skin compared to heavy petrolatum
We offer our Raw Organic Shea Butter for those looking to moisturize naturally without synthetics. It's especially great for dry skin, elbows, feet, and even gentle facial use at night.
🛏 Tips for Slugging at Night
-
Cleanse and moisturize your skin as usual
-
Apply your occlusive (shea butter or Vaseline) as the final step
-
Let it sit for 20–30 minutes before sleeping to reduce pillow transfer
-
Consider slugging 2–3x per week if you’re new to it
